Welcome to Studienstart Plus
The Studienstart Plus programme provides offers and services for first-year students of all disciplines to support them at the start of their studies. It allows you to familiarise yourself with the most important services and offers of the University, focusing on three areas. This will help you start into your studies successfully.
Settling in successfully at university
In this focus of Studienstart Plus, you will obtain basic information to help you ease into your studies.
- Rights and obligations: Everything you need to know about your role as a student.
- Organisation of studies: Tips and tools to help you plan your studies efficiently.
- Strategies for coping with challenges: How to deal with stress, exams and other challenges.
In STEOP mentoring (introductory and orientation period) you will reflect on your experiences with organisation, learning strategies and everyday university life.
Choose from a range of topics, such as AI in studies, academic language or stress management, offered as part of the advanced course programme.
Bridging knowledge gaps
Another focus of the Studienstart Plus programme is aimed at students from different disciplines:
- STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)
- Humanities
Seize the opportunity to refresh your prior knowledge from school. These courses will help you reach the required entry level. You are thus well-prepared for the requirements of university studies and the introductory and orientation period (STEOP).
Discovering science
First-year students gain insights into various research fields at the University of Vienna. The course offer changes every semester. Learn about new questions addressed in research, research methods and academic approaches – even beyond your own discipline. The courses in this focus are accompanied by tutorials.

How do I earn the ECTS credit for the course “STEOP Mentoring and Reflection”?
To complete this course, you must participate in a STEOP mentoring program offered by your department. If your department does not offer its own program, you can attend an interdisciplinary STEOP mentoring program through the CTL.
Separate registration is required for this course. If you upload your reflection on time, you will receive 1 ECTS credit for it. -
I’m studying to become a teacher – can I have Study Start Plus credited?
Yes. In the current bachelor’s program for teacher education, courses from Study Start Plus can be credited toward the elective area (10 ECTS).
Please note: In the new, shortened teacher education program (3 years), this elective area no longer exists.
If you are unsure, please contact your director of studies. -
Is attendance mandatory?
All courses are offered in a hybrid format.
Since Study Start Plus is also designed to encourage exchange and networking among students, on-site participation is strongly recommended.
However, after completing the required course components, it is possible to successfully complete the courses without being physically present.
Exceptions may apply — please refer to the relevant information in the u:find course entries. -
Is Study Start Plus mandatory?
